It feels like I haven't done digital work in so long. Not that I felt rusty, but my patience was wearing thin at times just because I hate my computer space.
I am really proud with how this came out, in terms of the fur shading. But I hate trying to shade Hot Pink hair. It makes me want to stab my eyes out with hardened spears of bubblegum. I always have so much fun drawing Jazz, I don't know why. x=x;; Hate trying to shade her hair though. dunno why I have such a hard time with it.
But yeah, this is a Christmas gift for the lovely *screamin-jazzy. I have another sketch laying around of her crawling all over my fursona, but, I had more fun with this.
Done entirely, start to finish, in Photoshop CS3. I think I spent about 6 hours on this on and off.

Is that necklace hanging off her name full-handrawn, a PS brush of stock?
Her eyes and lips look so realistic (Especially her lips). How do you do it? And pink hair is nowhere near as hard to shade as white hair.

It's a PS Brush. They're literally called Heart Chains and can be found here. The artist responsible has since left DA, but she's left the brushes in her gallery for everyone to use still.
It's all just color choice and shading. (And dumb luck I want to say sometimes.) I tend to paint my digital pieces with a low Opacity and Flow brush, screwing with the filter as I go. I remember using a light fleshy salmon pink and laying it down in a thin coat, then going back over it again with the brush filter set to multiply and the opacity turned down even more. I know for the lip shine I used cream, set it to vivid light, then hit two spots manually, then used the pen tool for the streak.
The eyes were kinda the same technique. I painted a rough eye first in a light umber color. (You can see a progress shot of the piece here.) Then I used a semi bright rust orange for the iris 'fibers' and used burn and dodge on the brown part of the eye to get the pupil and light shine.
I dunno, I've learned how to shade white because of Jess, my fursona. And it helps I have had to sit in Color Theory 4 times >.>;; (Kept dropping it cause the workload is fecking gigantic). And hot pink, being a color with extremely high saturation/chroma, it's a bit difficult to shade without losing that high level of chroma. White takes on the color around it, as well as you should keep in mind whether or not the character should have a warm color scheme or a cool color scheme. Warm tends to get shaded more yellow-ish, cool tends to be shaded more blue-ish.
Color is a huge subject to learn but once you master basics, everything seems to fall into place easier. I hated sitting in that class over and over, but the assignments taught me so much. Going to take that class one final time in January. Hopefully I'll pick up on it even more. Color Theory is so crucial I've found now. x=x;; It's really helped me improve my art.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
